Palm Dreams
I am drawn to palm trees; it’s the memory of home, of vacations, but also of what often accompanies them in their environment–vibrant cultures, warm climates and the lure of a tropical lifestyle.
In this ongoing photographic project, I explore a captivation with palm trees. As a Florida native, they were an ever-present part of the landscape growing up. But it wasn’t just in the physical realm that they were everywhere–they also represented an idea of a place, offering an escape from everyday life to someplace else.
Using creative and experimental techniques on 35mm film to visualize a dynamic, colorful and magnetic world beyond what is captured by my lens, this series represents my fascination with how palm trees symbolize an idea of a place, and the escapism that so many of us seek.
